Broadbent Bulletin – July 2025

Welcome to the July edition of the Broadbent Bulletin.

This summer, conversations from the 2025 Progress Summit: Daring to Take on Today’s Crises remain more relevant than ever. We’ve featured these discussions in new episodes of Progressive Political Economy—our original video series spotlighting progressive economic and political ideas aimed at building a more just and equal society.

In our latest episode, Todd Tucker warns that Trump’s “tariff tantrums” could cause further price gouging. Alongside U.S. Trade expert Beth Baltzan, they explain how, even amid growing uncertainty, progressives are advancing bold green industrial policy.

Public Opinion on Immigration Policy

After publishing Shifting Borders: Canadian Attitudes Towards Immigration, Director of Policy and Engagement Clement Nocos shared insights from the Broadbent Institute’s latest report on a virtual roundtable.

Nocos emphasized the importance of using public opinion research to shape progressive policies, highlighting the need for immigration policy that meets economic needs while upholding social justice and equity.

Taken together, these findings indicate that Canadians do support immigration. However, they want Canada’s immigration system to fulfill the economic objectives it was designed for […] to support the development of a strong and prosperous Canadian economy.

Grace Blakeley and Luke Savage Explain the Crisis of Neoliberalism

Following her 2025 Ellen Meiksins Wood Lecture, Grace Blakeley sat down with Luke Savage in Toronto to discuss the failures of neoliberal capitalism, the age of individualism it has produced, and what the left must do to rebuild working-class support.

The two show how the far-right has capitalized on the consequences of individualism and explain why collective organizing is essential to restoring democratic power.

What’s new in Perspectives Journal

From public groceries to industrial policy, Perspectives continues to spotlight bold ideas for building a world that is just and equitable.

In our latest op-eds:

  • Vass Bednar proposes municipally owned grocery stores as a response to food insecurity and price gouging.
  • Niko Block calls on Ottawa to replace corporate tax breaks with an industrial strategy focused on shared prosperity.
  • Carlos Cajina shows how tenant organizers can work with institutional actors to create effective housing policy.

On the Perspectives Journal Podcast, we shared the final three episodes of Class & Climate: Perspectives on a Green Economy. The series finale spotlights how Colombian oil workers are pushing for a worker-led transition away from fossil fuels. Earlier episodes featured Alex Connolly of Nova Scotia’s wind sector, comparing the workplace conditions from his time in the oil sands to his current work putting up wind turbines, and two researchers challenging the myth that commodified green consumption can solve the climate emergency.

This month, we joined PressProgress in celebrating labour reporter Emma Arkell, who won silver at the Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. Her story on anti-LGBTQ+ harassment in schools—published in Xtra Magazine before she joined PressProgress full-time—was honoured in the labour reporting category. Read more about her win and the award-winning reporting here.
