The Broadbent Institute welcomes the opportunity to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs 2025 program and offer a temporary summer placement for the role of Social Policy Analyst to conduct a research project within the Institute’s research work streams of Climate Action, Decommodification, Empowering Workers, Rights & Democracy and/or Science & Tech for All. As a Social Policy Analyst at the Broadbent Institute, you will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with our Director of Policy and Engagement, as well as other senior managers, on key priorities for a national think tank, and gain insights and experience in supporting key departments within a nonprofit organization.
Responsibilities
- Data entry, data interpretation, and data analysis in support of Institute’s ongoing policy research, development and communication priorities.
- Research tasks to support projects carried out by the Director of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement.
- Participating in the development of communications products for social media, e-mail, and other digital platforms based on analysis.
- Web content management, writing and editing of analysis and op-ed pieces.
- Engaging in general research, analysis and summarizing source material to support needs of Institute.
- Performing other such functions in support of the organization’s work as may be assigned.
Qualifications
- Interest in legislative or public policy research and analysis or in the development of legislation, regulations, or public policy.
- An understanding or interest in learning more about the strategic role of public policy in progressive campaigning, as used by the labour movement, community organizations, the environmental movement, the anti-racist movement, and or other social movements.
- Detail-oriented, well-organized, and capable of managing multiple requests and switching between priorities as directed.
- A team player, and with the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, or independently, as required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or equivalent processors, is a requirement.
- Experience using WordPress, Datawrapper, and statistical analysis applications such as STATA, SPSS, R, etc. is an asset.
- Knowledge of and experience publishing on social media and online is an asset.
- Bilingualism is a major asset.
Supervision, Mentoring and Evaluation
- The applicant will receive daily supervision meetings with the Director of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement and/or another member of the Management team, to establish priorities for the day, depending on the project they are working on.
- The successful candidate will also be provided with regular mentorship meetings focused on their personal skills, career development and knowledge sharing.
- Feedback will be given regularly and informally, and a more formal mid-term and final evaluation will be conducted.
