FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA – NDP interim leader Don Davies and MPs Alexandre Boulerice, Leah Gazan and Lori Idlout are standing in solidarity with leaders from across the Americas, backing the Panamerican Congress Declaration in defense of sovereignty, non-interference and international law against US coercion.
A clear indication of cross-border solidarity, the Declaration was signed by parliamentary leaders from across Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Uruguay. Together, the alliance of signatories condemns the revival of the US’s foreign policy doctrine of hemispheric domination and interference, unequivocally affirming international law as enshrined in the UN Charter.
“The Trump administration’s renewed push for hemispheric domination is a dangerous threat that demands a collective response,” said Davies. “I was proud to sign the Declaration of the Panamerican Congress because it demonstrates how coordinated, democratic action can help defend peace, self‑determination and sovereignty.
“In a moment of rising unilateralism, this declaration underscores the essential role of multilateral cooperation, diplomacy and respect for international law as the only legitimate basis for relations between nations,” added Davies. “Parliamentarians throughout the world must work together to uphold these principles.”
MP Idlout added that it is more important than ever to uphold sovereignty given US threats to Greenland, whose border is just offshore of Nunavut.
“We know that Trump’s threats to Greenland is a threat to our arctic sovereignty and to Canadian sovereignty as a whole. But whether it’s threats to our north or south, Canada must uphold the UN Charter and defend every country’s sovereignty against US aggression.”
MP Gazan, another signatory of the Declaration, emphasized that we cannot let acts of US authoritarianism go unchallenged.
“Canada has watched as Trump has wholeheartedly embraced fascist authoritarianism at home and abroad. We know exactly where this leads if it isn’t opposed, and we cannot let history repeat itself. It is essential Canada joins in solidarity with leaders across the hemisphere to stand up for human rights and international law.”
New Democratic MPs are set to join Panamerican Congress organizers in March at the Broadbent Institute’s 2026 Progress Summit. Its theme, ‘Defending Democracy Across Borders,’ will bring together progressive leaders to plan further steps to protect democracy and international law at home and abroad.
